The Java implementation of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Visual J++ only supports a part of the official Java interface. For example, the complete security module was omitted. To fill this gap, Microsoft added its own, Windows specific, interface (based on ActiveX). This means that programs developed for Microsoft's Java implementation won't run under non-Windows platforms, such as OS/2 or Unix. This is why The 100% Pure Javatm Program was launched. "Sun Microsystems sees this program as extremely important since it ensures that there is always a way for developers to write in Pure Java so that the multi-platform nature of Java is preserved and enhanced."
